Homemade Old Fashioned Vinegar Taffy Recipe

2cups dark corn syrup 1cup sugar 2 Tbsp. butter 1 Tbsp. vinegar 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. vanilla or other flavoring food coloring
Instructions
Combine the first four ingredients in a saucepan.
Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves. Continue cooking to 260°.
Remove from heat.
Stir in baking soda, vanilla and a few drops of food coloring.
Beat until smooth and creamy.
Pour into a buttered pan.
When cool enough to handle, butter your hands and pull until light in color.
Pull into long strips and cut into 1 inch pieces.

Is additional food coloring to be added a second time after it is boiled with the first 5 ingredients? If so, is this to make it the color you prefer? If not, is it to be added before or after the boiling of first 4 and not first 5 ingredients? Really confused.

Kay when you remove it from the heat just add the soda, vanilla and how much food coloring you want at this time and you are good to go. You don’t even have to add the food coloring if it will be easier for you because it is just for fun and to make it any color you want. Jill

I had the same question and I’m confused about the answer. It says to combine the first 5 ingredients, which includes coloring and then add coloring after removing from the heat. You say the food coloring is optional, is there a missing ingredient in the 4th position?

Sorry it was my mistake. I fixed it on the recipe. Do the syrup, sugar, butter, and vinegar then add the food coloring at the end. Sorry for the mix up and thanks for the heads up.

One of our favorite cold winter evening activities at Grandpa’s. As soon as is was cool enough, Grandpa would throw it up over the coat hooks at the door with his “buttered hands” and let fall again and again until it was pulled enough and then Grandma would cut it into pieces. Thanks for a fond memory from the 1950’s.
But acetic acid reacts only with certain kinds of substances—and sugar isn't one of them. In fact, candy might dissolve more slowly in vinegar, since the acetic acid molecules don't dissolve sugar as well as water does.
Taffy is a type of candy invented in the United States, made by stretching and/or pulling a sticky mass of a soft candy base, made of boiled sugar, butter, vegetable oil, flavorings, and colorings, until it becomes aerated (tiny air bubbles produced), resulting in a light, fluffy and chewy candy.
Why do I add cornstarch? The addition of cornstarch (called cornflour in British recipes) helps give the taffy a smooth texture. Why do I add corn syrup? Corn syrup acts as an "interfering agent" in this and many other candy recipes.
Does salt water taffy expire? Yes, taffy can go bad and generally expires six months after purchase. Homemade taffy expires even sooner and only lasts 3-7 days.
My procedure was putting different colored skittles in each of the liquids, and seeing how fast, and how long it took for the skittles to melt. For my results, the Mountain Dew was the fastest dissolver, with a time of 25 secs., Apple Cider Vinegar had 31 secs., Water had 36 secs., and Oil never dissolved.
When the vinegar is dropped on the powdered sugar, a reaction does not occur. Vinegar and baking soda create a chemical reaction, and it will fizz and bubble as carbon dioxide gas is formed. Comparing test results of known substances to unknown substances can help forensic scientists identify unknown substances.
Apple cider vinegar and other types may lower post-meal glucose levels by 20% when consumed before eating carbs. Drinking vinegar diluted in water or using it as a salad dressing are effective ways to incorporate it. Vinegar's impact stems from its acidic nature, so neutralizing it eliminates the blood sugar benefits.
Since salt water taffy gained its moniker following that offhanded comment after the flooding in Atlantic City, there is really no difference between salt water taffy and regular taffy. There was little or no salt added to the candy over 100 years ago or now.
The difference is mainly in the candy-making process: taffy is pulled and stretched until it's soft and chewy. Toffee, on the other hand, won't stick in your teeth like taffy, because it is boiled, shaped, and allowed to harden into a delicious, glossy slab.
The simple answer is that there is too much moisture in your candy. One or more factors could be contributing to this problem. In hard candy making, it is important to cook all the water out of the sugar/corn syrup/water mixture.
The purpose of pulling the taffy is to add air in to the candy. This allows for millions of air bubbles to form which is how a clear batch of cooked taffy all of a sudden begins to turn bright white. The added air into the product also adds volume, and turns the candy into a much larger piece.
“In some sense, oil droplets and air bubbles are like rubber balls. When deformed in the taffy, they tend to return to their original, spherical shape because of surface tension. In other words, emulsification and aeration make taffy more elastic, hence, chewier.”
Taffy is made using ingredients like corn syrup, sugar, oil, honey, egg whites, salt, and other natural and artificial flavors. Once the candy ingredients are heated to the perfect temperature and mixed thoroughly, it starts to transform into a sticky mixture.
Crumble the chips in a bowl and add milk or water to cover the chips. Put it in the microwave and stir; the consistency should be like mashed potatoes. Once that is complete, open the bag completely so the inside of the bag is facing up. Lay the potato chip mixture on the bag, and flatten it out like a pancake.
